Be aware that your Snapchat account is at risk

What happened to snapchat?

For a couple of hours on Wednesday morning, Snap Streaks were at risk as many users reported they couldn’t successfully post story updates or send messages on the service. In a tweet, the Snapchat Support Twitter account confirmed the issues, telling people to “hang tight, we’re looking into it!”

Snapchat users reported widespread outages of the messaging app Wednesday morning in the most recent instance of a major social media outage, coming nine days after Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp

 went dark

for six hours.

Beginning at about 7 a.m., tens of thousands of users reported that Snapchat was down and they were unable to send or receive messages, according to Downdetector, a website dedicated to tracking outages.

The outage lasted more than three hours, and the company’s official support account tweeted that the issue was resolved at 10:31 a.m.

There is no reported cause for the interruption of service, and a Snapchat spokesperson wouldn’t comment on the cause, but told Forbes that “the issue has been resolved.”

Snapchat tweeted Wednesday morning during the outage: “We’re aware that some Snapchatters are having issues using the app right now - hang tight, we’re looking into it!”

Last week, Snapchat rival Facebook was the one battling a major outage, as Facebook and its Instagram, WhatsApp and Messenger apps went dark for six hours, reportedly costing Facebook $65 million in lost revenue. During the Facebook outage, Snapchat usage surged 23%, according to analytics company Sensory Tower.

Is the problem resolved or not?

The source of the issue was unclear, but this doesn’t seem to be a Facebook-level event. The app itself was still mostly functional for some of us, and if you weren’t trying to post, you may not have noticed anything wrong right away. It also wasn’t crashing constantly, which has been a problem for Snapchat.

At about 10:31AM ET the Snapchat Support Twitter account confirmed the issue is fixed, and everything is working again on our end.
